How the Chinese zodiac works
The Chinese zodiac (shēngxiào) runs on a 12-year cycle, one animal per year, in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Your animal is decided by the Chinese lunar year you were born in — which starts on Chinese New Year, not January 1. That is why someone born on January 20, 2025 is a Dragon (2024's animal), while someone born on February 10, 2025 is a Snake.
Each year also carries one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — on a separate 10-year cycle, and a Yin or Yang polarity. Together they give a fuller description such as "Yin Wood Snake". Use the calculator above for your exact combination, or browse the 12 signs and every compatibility pairing.
