How Chinese compatibility is judged

Unlike a vague "vibe", Chinese compatibility follows a fixed structure based on how far apart two animals sit in the 12-year cycle.

The four affinity triangles — animals four years apart, considered highly compatible because they share values and pace: Rat–Dragon–Monkey (driven, quick-thinking), Ox–Snake–Rooster (steady, hard-working), Tiger–Horse–Dog (idealistic, freedom-loving), Rabbit–Goat–Pig (gentle, home-loving).

The six secret friends (六合) — each animal's single strongest bond: Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Goat. The six clash pairs (六冲) — animals six years apart, the hardest match: Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, Snake–Pig. The six harm pairs (六害) are a milder friction: Rat–Goat, Ox–Horse, Tiger–Snake, Rabbit–Dragon, Monkey–Pig, Rooster–Dog.

Anything not on those lists is neutral — a relationship built on effort rather than the calendar.

Why the gap between two birth years matters at all

The whole system rests on one idea: animals that sit a fixed distance apart on the 12-year wheel tend to share something about how they move through life, and animals sitting exactly opposite each other tend to pull in different directions. Four years apart puts two signs in the same affinity triangle — close enough in temperament that trust tends to build fast, without much explaining required. Six years apart, the maximum possible distance on a 12-point wheel, puts two signs in direct opposition, which traditional astrology reads as both the source of real friction and, just as often, real attraction — opposites pulling toward each other precisely because neither one is a mirror of the other. The six secret-friend and six harm pairs sit outside that clean geometric pattern entirely, defined instead by a fixed list handed down from older bāzì tradition rather than by counting years.

What this system is genuinely good for

Setting aside whether any of it is scientifically predictive — it isn't — the compatibility framework is a surprisingly useful shared vocabulary for talking about relationship dynamics that are otherwise hard to name. "We're a clash pair" gives two people a light, low-stakes way to acknowledge real friction over pace or control without it turning into a serious accusation. "We're secret friends" gives a couple or a pair of business partners a nice bit of validating shorthand for something that was probably already working. None of that requires believing the calendar caused the dynamic — it's simply a ready-made vocabulary that happens to map reasonably well onto common relationship patterns, which is likely part of why it has stayed popular for so long.

A word on the size of this section

Twelve signs, paired with all twelve others including themselves, produces 144 individual combinations, though the reciprocal pairs (Rat–Ox and Ox–Rat, for instance) point to the same page, so the practical count of distinct write-ups is smaller than 144 but still substantial. Each pairing page is written specifically for that combination — its own communication styles, its own work dynamic, its own version of the folk-tale background — rather than a single template with two names swapped in, which is why browsing a few different pairings involving the same animal will read as genuinely different pieces, not repeats of each other.
