Chinese Zodiac 2027: Every Sign and the Year of the Goat

Chinese New Year 2027 falls on February 6 and starts the Year of the Goat. Every sign has a fixed relationship with the Goat in the traditional compatibility chart, and that is the easiest way to see how your own animal sits next to the new year. This guide goes through all 12 signs, lists the birth years for each, and says plainly what the chart does and does not claim.

If you only want the dates, see our Year of the Goat 2027 guide. This page is about the relationships.

How we sort the signs

The chart we use on this site sorts every pair of animals into one of a few groups: secret friends, the affinity triangle, clash, harm, the same sign, or neutral. Our full compatibility guide explains where each group comes from. Here we ask a narrower question. If the Goat is the sign of the year, which group does each of the other 11 animals fall into?

Counting every sign once, the answer is: one own sign (the Goat), one secret friend (the Horse), two affinity-triangle signs (the Rabbit and the Pig), one clash (the Ox), one harm (the Rat), and six neutral signs (the Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Monkey, Rooster and Dog). That adds up to 12.

Birth years for each sign

Find your birth year in the table, then check the date. Anyone born in January or early February belongs to the sign of the year before, because the new animal starts on Chinese New Year, not on January 1. The calculator checks your exact birthday.

The Goat itself

People born in a Goat year are in their own sign year in 2027, which tradition calls the běnmìngnián. It is the one group on this list where there is no real pair, because the Goat meets the Goat. For two people of the same sign, our chart gives the rating "Fair": comfortable, because you share instincts, but nobody balances the other. What tradition adds for your own year is a custom. Many people wear red through their own sign year for protection. Our guide to the běnmìngnián covers what the custom claims and where it comes from.

The Horse: the secret friend

The Horse and the Goat are one of the six secret-friend pairs, which the chart treats as the strongest bond an animal has, rated "Excellent". Horse years are 2002, 2014 and 2026, so the Horse is handing over to its secret friend when 2027 begins. It is a neat detail that 2026 is a Fire Horse year and 2027 is a Fire Goat year. You can read the pairing on its own page: Horse and Goat.

The Rabbit and the Pig: the affinity triangle

The Rabbit, the Goat and the Pig sit four years apart on the 12-year wheel, which puts them in one affinity triangle. The chart reads that as shared temperament and easy trust. If you are a Rabbit or a Pig, the Goat year is a sign from your own triangle, so the chart rates the pairing "Very good", and reads it as similar values and a similar pace. The pages to read are Rabbit and Goat and Goat and Pig.

The Ox: the clash

The Ox and the Goat are six years apart, the farthest two animals can be on the wheel. The chart calls this a clash, and the clash pairs get our lowest rating, "Difficult". The traditional reading is friction over control and direction, with strong attraction common too. For the Ox the Goat year is the sign that stands directly opposite. Read Ox and Goat for the full pairing.

The Rat: the harm

The Rat and the Goat are one of the six harm pairs, rated "Challenging". Harm is a milder friction than a clash, and it comes from a fixed list rather than from counting years. We looked at the pattern in the list in our guide to the six harm pairs. The pairing is on its own page: Rat and Goat.

The six neutral signs

The Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Monkey, Rooster and Dog have no special bond or conflict with the Goat in this chart, and each pairing is rated "Moderate". That is half of all signs. The chart's own wording for these pairs is that the relationship is built on effort, not on the calendar. If your animal is on this list, it is fine to read the year as just another year.

How the ratings line up

Putting the groups side by side shows how our chart scores them for a Goat. The Horse is at the top (Excellent). The Rabbit and the Pig come next (Very good). Another Goat and the six neutral signs sit in the middle: Fair for the Goat and Moderate for the others, and both carry the same score of 3 out of 5 in our chart. The Rat comes after that (Challenging), and the Ox is last (Difficult). Only two signs sit at the hard end. Of the 11 other animals, 9 are neutral or better for a Goat.

What this does and does not mean

None of this predicts how 2027 will go for you. The groups describe how two animals sit on a traditional wheel. They are not verdicts about people, and plenty of couples with a "clash" pairing have long, happy relationships. Some traditions go further and name signs that are said to clash with the year itself, and the sources do not all agree on how that works. We stick to the chart above, which we can state exactly.

If you are curious about your own pairings in more detail, open your sign's compatibility table and read all 12 pairings in one place.
