Chinese Zodiac vs Western Zodiac: What's the Difference?
People often mix the two up. They are unrelated systems.
What decides your sign
The Western zodiac (Aries, Taurus, …) is set by the position of the sun at your birth, so it depends on your month and day and changes roughly every 30 days. The Chinese zodiac is set by your lunar birth year and changes once a year.
Number of signs and cycle length
Both have 12 signs. The Western cycle completes in one year; the Chinese animal cycle takes 12 years, or 60 years once the element is included.
How they are used
Western astrology focuses on individual personality and daily horoscopes. Chinese astrology puts more weight on compatibility between people, luck in a given year, and auspicious timing for big decisions.
Can you have both?
Yes — everyone has a Western sun sign and a Chinese animal. For example, someone born on March 5, 1990 is a Western Pisces and a Chinese Metal Horse.
