Is the Chinese Zodiac Real? How to Think About It
Short answer: the Chinese zodiac is a cultural tradition, not a scientific system. There is no evidence that the year you were born in shapes your personality, and studies of "birth-month" and "birth-year" personality effects consistently find nothing beyond chance.
So why has it lasted 2,000 years?
A few reasons. It is a useful memory aid — attaching an animal to each year makes ages and dates easy to talk about.
