Born in 1984: the Rat

1984 is a yang year, a Wood Rat. In the traditional calendar it carries the two-part name 甲子 (jiǎzǐ), year 1 of the 60-year cycle. The Wood element adds a cooperative, growth-minded and quietly generous streak to the Rat's base character (quick-witted, resourceful, adaptable), and this is the active, outgoing half of the cycle.

The 1984 lunar year ran from February 2, 1984 up to the day before Chinese New Year 1985 (February 20, 1985). If you were born on or after February 2, 1984 you are a Rat; if you were born earlier in 1984, you belong to the previous year's sign, the Pig. Someone born in 1984 turns 42 in 2026 (or 41 until their birthday for the year).

Calendar note: 1984's Chinese New Year fell on a Thursday, and that lunar year ran 384 days — a long, 13-month year with an inserted leap month.

What the Wood element adds

Wood is the element of spring, growth and cooperation. A Wood year tends to soften an animal's sharper edges and push it toward teamwork, patience and building things that last rather than chasing quick wins.

The full 60-year cycle pairs each of the 12 animals with each of the 5 elements, so a Wood Rat year comes around only once every 60 years — the last one before 1984 was 1924, and the next is 2044. People born in it are said to combine quick-witted and resourceful with the element's cooperative nature. Every Rat year is yang (the active, outgoing type). See the Wood element and the full Wood Rat profile.

Where a birthday around 1984 lands

The zodiac year does not follow the calendar year, so 1984 is spread across two calendar years. This table shows exactly which animal a birthday gets.

Birthday	Zodiac animal
January 1 to February 1, 1984	Pig (the 1983 year)
February 2, 1984 to December 31, 1984	Rat
January 1, 1985 to February 19, 1985	Rat (still the 1984 year)
February 20, 1985 onward	Ox (the 1985 year)

Zodiac years ahead for a 1984 Rat

The next own-sign year for someone born in 1984 is 2032, around age 48, then 2044, around age 60. Tradition calls this your běnmìngnián. Despite being "your" year, it is thought to clash with Tài Suì (the God of Age) and to carry a higher chance of setbacks, so many people wear red through it for protection.

The element pair: 1984 and 1985

Wood years come in pairs. 1984 is the yang year and 1985 is the yin year, the Ox. So a 1984 Rat and a 1985 Ox share an element and sit one year apart in the cycle. The traditional chart rates the Rat and Ox pairing as excellent: one of the six classic 'secret friend' pairings — a naturally supportive, stabilizing match. See the Rat and Ox pairing.

What a Wood year changes for the Rat

Talking. In conversation, a Wood Rat leans further into action, saying yes before thinking it all the way through, which is the main way 1984's version differs from the same animal born under another element.

Work. Wood softens and adds patience to the Rat's usual working style, so a 1984 Rat tends to run things with more willingness to cooperate than most. The kind of work the sign suits stays the same; the element changes how the job gets done.

Love. Wood is the element of spring, growth and cooperation, so in a relationship a Wood Rat shows affection through steady cooperation over time.

For the sign as a whole (how the Rat communicates, works and loves in every element) see the Rat profile. This page covers what is different about 1984.

Known Rats

Katy Perry was born in the 1984 lunar year, an exact Wood Rat match for this page. Other well-known Rats, from other years, include King Charles III, Cameron Diaz and Eminem. A shared sign says nothing about how anyone's life goes; these are simply familiar names to put to the sign.
